10 Minutes with Andrew Hope

In our latest, ‘Ten Minutes,’ interview we speak to Hope Creative owner and big West Brom fan Andrew Hope. Here he tells us how he’s always loved drawing, why his school arts teacher spurred him on and what his plans are for the future.

Tell us about you.

Career wise – I’ve worked in graphic design since leaving art college in the 1980s. 

From a personal perspective – I’m a massive West Brom fan and live in Stafford with my wife Celine – who’s French/Portuguese. We have one grown-up daughter Elena who has just got her first teaching job – so we are very proud of her. 

Tell us all about your business?

I founded Hope Creative in 2009. There are two strands to the business – branding and design. We do everything you would expect from a branding and design company from designing marketing literature to creating an entire new brand for a company. Myself and my trusted team of associates work with different clients across the country. One of the things we’re most proud of at Hope Creative is something called our Brand Doctor Service. It takes the client on a journey through the entire design process to create a brand or even refresh an existing brand. We look at everything from the company’s vision, strategy and mission to what their brand personality is as well as brand perception.

What did you do before setting up the business?

I always loved art and drawing at school so it was the next natural step for me to go to art school. I went to Stourbridge Art College and I absolutely loved it – it was there that I decided to focus on the graphic design side and that’s where my career began. Before launching Hope Creative I worked for a large global engineering firm and led the design team there. I then went onto work for a Housing Association and headed up their in-house creative team but I got to the stage in my career where I wanted to run my own creative agency using the experience and skills I’d honed over the years and I’m pleased to say I’ve never looked back.

What are your plans for 2022?

I’m currently working on a ninety-day plan to build the business further. I want to offer our Brand Doctor service to more companies, including start ups and increase our turnover.

Who is your inspiration?

I’ve been working with a business coach called Peter Gregory. He has been fantastic and made such a difference to Hope Creative. He’s helped us update our strategy and adapt especially since the pandemic.

What was your dream at school?

I wanted to be a footballer. I was a good runner and ran for the borough but never quite made it on the pitch! I always loved drawing and being creative though and still love it now – so ended up in a career that was perfect for me.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

In my school days I had an amazing art teacher. She managed to get some of my artwork into an exhibition in Manchester. She always told me that I had the talent and that I shouldn’t lose it – that led to me going to art school. I’ve never forgotten her!

What would you spend your last £100 on?

Definitely art materials – I still love to draw but never seem to find the time. New art materials – would help spur me on.
