A North Staffordshire business is celebrating its 50th birthday with £300,000 plans to redevelop one of its showrooms.

Bowyer’s Beds, which has two showrooms, one in Hartshill and one in Fenton was founded by Michael and Brenda Bowyer back in 1972.

Now owned and run by their son Adam, the company which specialises in providing high quality beds and carpets is still a family run firm. Six staff are employed across both sites.

Over half a century the company estimates they’ve sold 100,000 beds to customers across Staffordshire and Cheshire with thousands of metres of carpets laid.

Originally based across the road from its current main showroom in Hartshill Road, Bowyer’s just sold carpets before moving into selling beds as well in the early 1980’s.

As the company and its reputation grew, they expanded by opening a second showroom on King Street in Fenton in 1982, which Adam now has plans to completely redevelop. Within the next two years the plan is to knock down the existing building and replace it with a two-storey bespoke showroom (subject to planning approval.)

Bowyer’s Beds are now premier stockists for Silentnight and Staffordshire’s largest stockists of the luxury brand Harrison Spinks.

Priding themselves on being as environmentally friendly as possible, they also offer a service where they take old beds away to be recycled rather than going to landfill. The Harrisons Spinks beds range they carry are also recyclable.

Adam said: “I was a babe in arms when Mum and Dad set up the company, so I don’t ever remember a time when the business wasn’t in my life. My parents grafted to make Bowyer’s a success and I remember growing up as the business grew itself.  When Mum and Dad moved away it was the next logical step in my career to take over the running of the business.

“We’re now based just across the road from where it all started in a building we renovated to make into a tailored showroom. I’m now looking forward to redeveloping our other showroom in Fenton as we head towards our 51st year in business.

He added: “I think the success of Bowyer’s Beds is down to hard work, determination, a good working environment and a trusted reputation – much of our work is from word of mouth and knowing our customers think that highly of us makes me really proud. As in any industry, the technology around how beds and carpets are manufactured has changed hugely over the years and we work with the best suppliers in the market to ensure we embrace that technology.”

Founder Michael who now lives in the Isle of Man with Adam’s Mum Brenda said: “I’m delighted that Bowyer’s is celebrating its 50th birthday. We started from humble beginnings just selling beds in our local area, but our reputation soon grew as did the business. It wasn’t long before we opened a second store. I am so proud to see our name still going after all these years and much of that is down to Adam’s hard work.”

Bowyers Beds are open six days a week, Monday to Saturday 9am until 5:30pm.
