So it’s Get a Different Name Day and I’m sure some of us would change our names if we could. To be fair I’m happy with mine. I like it and I like being called Tams.
If I had a £1 for every time, I got called Tasmin though – I wouldn’t need to work, I’d be minted so I guess if I was ever going to change my name Tasmin would make the most sense. I wouldn’t have to spend my time correcting people then, although sometimes I just don’t bother, what’s mixing up a couple of letters between friends?
Anyway, talking about names, why I named the company Legs PR is usually a conversation starter and something I get asked quite often so I thought I’d set the record straight.
I can vividly remember waiting for a colleague I was meeting at a Starbucks near Uttoxeter and doodling on a notepad. I wasn’t happy in the job and was daydreaming about setting up my own company one day although I never really thought it would happen.
I’d always worked in journalism, PR, or both, and: “has your story got legs?” sprang to mind. That as they say is history. Fast-forward to a few years later and Legs PR was born – it’s literally as simple as that.
The branding has its own story too. My beautiful Mum who we lost nine years ago, always used to tell me off for wearing too much black (that’s changed now Mum) and for her funeral, for that very reason I wore a black dress with a red stripe down the side. I wanted the branding to be a message to Mum, with just that simple flash of colour to say I did listen to her and that she’d always be an integral part of my story.
Mum and Dad always taught me and my sister to aim high and instilled in us that anything’s possible if you work hard enough. I find it comforting to know that Mum’s influence helped me set up the business, even if she’s not here to see it.
Would have I called the business anything else, no? I didn’t want my name in it anywhere. I’m pretty sure it would have got called Tasmin if I’d have done that anyway!
