TOP TIPS

Stay ahead of the game

Our ‘Top Tips’ series helps you grow your business through the media. In this post you’ll learn how to become a pro at radio interviews.

So, you’re doing a radio interview for the first time and you’re not sure what you expect or how to pull it off. Follow the first in our series of top tips to get the most from your five minutes of radio fame.

TIP ONE

Prepare for the first questions

The reporter’s first questions will set the scene e.g. tell us what’s happening? They often use this information for their script. You’ll get asked open questions, e.g. what, when, who, why, how? Be prepared for that and be clear on what you want to say. Clips taken for news bulletins, certainly in commercial radio, are on average around 15 seconds long.

TIP TWO

Define your key message

Think about why you wanted coverage in the first place. What were you publicising? Think about what your key messages are. What do you want to get across? This is your opportunity to shine, think about what message you want to get over, whatever question you’re asked.

TIP THREE

Do your homework

Is your interview live or pre-recorded? What’s the demographic of the station you’re being interviewed on? If you’re being interviewed live what’s the presenter’s style like? Answering all of these questions will help you prepare properly.

TIP FOUR

Stay unscripted

If your interview is pre-recorded, or over the phone don’t be tempted to read off a script or off your press release, your interviewer and audience will be able to tell, and your answers will sound stilted.

TIP FIVE

Say cheeeese!

Be prepared to have your picture taken for the station’s website and social media feeds. Don’t forget to share the links on your socials too to get even more coverage.
